Corridor Business Journal: 2012 – 2013

Duane-Arnold-reactor-427x284My first “real” job out of college. I covered a huge beat, including anything and everything happening with Cedar Rapids and Linn County businesses and economic issues. Major topics of coverage include: ongoing recovery from the floods of 2008, economic development initiatives, workforce issues, profiles of new businesses and entrepreneurs, and coverage of high-profile established businesses, such as Rockwell Collins.

A few examples:

  • The broad nature of my beat required me to quickly become an “expert” on topics I’m not very familiar with. I like that–I got into journalism so I could learn something new every day. A couple examples: A profile of a prominent financial advisor and a story on nuclear energy.
  • Sometimes I got to take a small news nugget and look at the bigger picture. When the city of Marion applied for Main Street designation, I looked at the history of that program and how it has impacted other communities in the Corridor region.
  • Recovery from the floods of 2008 is still a huge issue in Cedar Rapids. Many of my stories relate to the flood in some way (for an overview, check out my 2012 in review story). Frequently, I tried to tell the stories of progress with photos: some examples include housing recovery, the in-progress public library, and the beautifully-restored historic Paramount Theatre.
