The Iowa State Daily was where I first got to dip my toes into the waters of journalism before falling in the deep end. It was great. I worked with a lot of really inspiring people (especially our beloved advisor, Mark Witherspoon) and got a chance to develop my leadership skills after becoming an editor.

In hindsight, two projects stand out as especially ambitious:

  • Daily Directory / Welcome Back: I first became a section editor in May 2010, and by August I was responsible for two 100+ page special sections (in addition to overseeing much of the regular paper). I’m still not totally sure how we pulled that off.
  • Strategic Plan: A few months later, I considered applying for the Daily’s top job, Editor in Chief. As part of the application, I had to create a strategic plan explaining to the Publication Board what steps I thought the Daily should take going forward. Even though I ended up not applying, creating the plan was a very educational and worthwhile experience.
